Hot Times 1,2,3,4

Hot Times 1

Early Marriage

She cooks

He cooks

1972 Wedding Gift: Cooking For Newlyweds

Hot Dogs Stuffed with Cheese... Bleccccchh! (It's a cheesy book!)

They improvise

He cooks

She cooks

He cooks up a stew one night while she's at school

Ah, the spice of life: What's this in the cupboard?

Tabasco! Yes! a few drops...

Then, on the other hand... a few more...

Maybe some more for the pot

Home for dinner, Aahhhhh,

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah! Inedible terribly incredible

Waaaaay tooooo hot stew!

Cut the heat.

Add more meat

Freeze it, halve it.

Dilute it. Un-pollute it

Add new batch o' plain ol' stew. NO spice.

Plenty potatoes might be nice.

Following week, they try again.

Now not painfully hot.

Still makes sweat pour down their brows

Makes the mouth burn for hours

But it's ours... they say

This newlywed heat

They laugh a lot

At the pot

Full of HOT!

Hot Times 2

Transition

Transition is the hardest part, I read

Off goes the nightgown

Off go the socks

Tell Jill when she comes, I tell him, TELL her!

I shiver, put nightgown on again

Forget the frickin socks!

Tell her: Transition is the hardest part, OKAAAAAAAYYY?

Don't wanna scare her

Cheeses, Take this heat awaaaaaayyy.

Off goes the gown.

Jill arrives. Midwife Sue tells her, boil water.

Jill goes to our kitchen

She boils water

Midwife says,

Make Black Cohosh tea

Jill makes Black Cohosh tea

Jill had a daughter by Caesarean seven years ago

Wanted to SEE a birth

Drink the tea, Midwife Sue says

Brings contractions faster

Stronger, Sue says

CHEESES, I yell. If they were any stronger, I'd be YELLING!

Nightgown on again

I hold my breath

Pushing tea aside

Tipping chin to chest, I grunt

Where does that primal sound come from?

I wonder inside my head

There it is again. Deep rumble

DON'T PUSH, Sue says

Let me check again.

NOOOOOO, I yell/grunt

I'm a wanna I wanna Pu-u-u-u-ussssssssshhhhhhhhhhh!

Sue checks dilation anyway

Good to go she says.

Come onto the table, she says

YOU WANT ME TO WHAAATTTT???

I'm hot again

Mouth wide, pant-grunting

Between rushes they move me

Like a beached whale

I rail against the move; against gravity

Gravity sucks

Squatting on table gravity helps

Legs wobbly then strong again.

Purposeful pushes

Then rest back down

My beloved darlin' man at my back

I lean into him

He wipes my brow with a cool cloth

I love him

I hate him

I love him

Remembering a woodcut from Mexico

Couple in labor

She squats, rope in hand

It's thrown over the rafter

Other end tied 'round his balls

Each contraction

She pulls the rope

True ancient practice?

Or New Yorker humor from 1800s?

I squeeze his hand and breathe through the smaller rushes

Conserving energy for bigger waves

They pulse through me. Rhythmic

Each brings this child closer to our arms

Wanna see the head? Sue says

She holds a mirror

Touching my baby's head, I make a curl of

Fine dark hair - gossamer circle

Hello, baby

Another rush and burning, good burn

Heat of pleasure so intense

Hot. Heat! I say inside my head

If my belly had eyebrows, they'd be raised

Head crowning. Crowning glory

Crooning with pleasant heat

I repeat aloud, "Hot. Heeeeeeeaaaatttt!!!"

Our belly person slips into the world

Orgasmically

Into our arms

Into our hearts forever

Into the future

Our future has arrived in a perfect package

Trusting perfection

I don't count fingers

I don't count toes

Some how mama knows

All is well

This new life warms our hearts

That first moment and still

Now, SHE has a daughter

Who is hot stuff!

Devlyn, the Brave. Fierce. Wild. Imaginative child and kind.

Blessings on the Hot Times

That we may seek the cool parts

Life has to offer us warm-blooded hot-headed mammals

Hot Times 3

Heating and Cooling

1990s too hot for nighties

Two daughters Pre-menstrual

One mama peri-menopausal

One husband Pre-occupied

One globe feeling fried

We all tried

Gave it our best shot

Got through the heat of PMS

Got through hot flashes of personal tropics

Got through the Occupy Movement

Post-work Hubby finds hot times at summer camp

Wifey teaches cool yoga and meditation

Daughters find warm and wonderful men

Poor globe warms too fast

Leaving us all aghast

Tweeter Dumb holds the reigns

Up to us to retain old gains

Choosing ways to impact less

On Mother Earth we're but guests

Hot Times 4

Middle of the night

Emotion flares

Hot. Too hot to sleep

I weep

All is awry

Hard as I try

Could this be

The End we see?

Are we lemming-like running

At the sea?

So occluded we cannot tell

That we created our very own hell??

What will it take for personal greed

To subside so we'll all be freed

From the cycle of buy, use, repeat

Do NOT recycle: It takes time

Do NOT re-use: It's inconvenient

Do NOT re-purpose: There are always new things to

BUY, BUY, BUY!

Bye Bye Earth

Bye Bye birth

Bye Bye old lady whispering hush

Bye Bye sweet bowl full of mush

Bye Bye Goon

And Bye Bye moon...

Much too soon
